Study Advice

Time Management
One of the most important aspects for students to manage if their time, especially if they are of part-time students. Even those who are full-time often have to deal with church responsibilities, family commitments, and other important items. Too often, it is the required private study that is pushed to one side. Before commencing study it is wise to consider as objectively as possible all of the potential distractions and commitments that might impede on your ability to complete a course. Be honest with yourself and be prepared to make sacrifices. Studying for a degree is hard work and will require determination in making time for study.

Get Organised
In order to study effectively, you must develop good organisational skills. This means you need to be aware of all aspects of your course, from logistical to academic matters. Make sure you plan your days and weeks ahead of time, keeping a diary or calendar so that you are aware of what you need to do by what time. Ensure you know what's required, logistical standpoint: sometimes, all manner of forms need to be completed and signed. In your academic work, you need to know when your essays or assignments are due.

Work Hard
Never imagine that studying for a formal qualification is straightforward. It will require diligence and determination. Any course that requires little effort is unlikely to worthwhile. C. H. Spurgeon once said, “The way to do a great deal, is to keep on doing a little. The way to do nothing at all, is to be continually resolving that you will do everything.”

Find out about Student Services
Students are often unaware of the wealth of options available to them from their university or college. Take time to read brochures, prospectuses or other student guides that will let you know what is available. Sometimes, services cost a small fee such as typing services or proofreading. At other times there may be no charge, for example with interlibrary book loans. Some institutions are able to offer bursaries or book grants so be sure to find out what is available to you.

Read, Read, Read - and Read the Right Books!
In order to understand your subject well, it is important to read widely and to understand all of the concepts. When writing essays, you need to demonstrate that your opinions and facts are well sourced and come from reputable writers. All of this means that you must obtain the right books (either via library or through purchasing). Your course lecturer or teacher will advise you on the correct books to read.
